05:50:45 <kaoos> Hi, is it possible to assign a global serial number to each and every transaction made (spanning all acconunts)? So for example, each new transaction that is made, indpedendent of which account, will be assigned a unique number, and increase the total counter by one?
05:51:02 <kaoos> I'm using the stable version of gnucash if that matters
06:01:06 <kimmo> not automatically no
06:04:53 <kaoos> hm, ok
06:07:46 <kaoos> generally, when I pay for something and recieve a reciept, I will add the transaction into gnucash, and I will put the actual reciept in a binder. How are the connection between reciept and transaction made, if I would like to go through the bookkeeping to make sure each transaction was valid? Atm I go only by the Date of transaction (same as reciept) and the description of the transaction....
06:08:15 <kimmo> you can use the "Memo" column for that, but you need to manually enter the numbers
06:11:15 <kaoos> but shouldn't there be a way (doesn't have to be a number...) to easily look up a reciept in a binder by looking at the transaction in gnucash?
06:11:38 <kaoos> how else are you going to veryfy the correctnes of the bookkeeping?
06:22:44 <kimmo> yes
06:23:29 <kimmo> When I file the receipts in my binders, I record "Receipt 123" on the receipt, and write "123" in the Memo column
06:24:30 <kaoos> ok, I see - thanks :) I will try your method
06:26:45 <kimmo> I do this once a month; I enter the transactions to gnucash once I become aware of them, and use the Memo column as a note to self for upcoming transactions, like "ok" if its a bill I have to pay and have already entered it in internet banking, or "aa" if it's a payment I should receive on that date. and once the transaction has happened, I empty the memo column. And when I file the receipts, I give them numbers
06:27:00 <kaoos> do you have any nice system for knowing which should be the next reciept number?
06:27:14 <kimmo> there is a Tools -> General Ledger
06:27:22 <kimmo> which shows all transactions in a single register
06:27:33 <kimmo> I use that when I'm doing the numbering routine
06:28:38 <kimmo> I'm pretty sure there might be a smarter way to do this, but I have only about 50 or so receipts per month so it doesn't really take that much time, and when it becomes too bothersome I'll just outsource the bookkeeping
06:29:17 <kaoos> ok, that sounds reasonable
06:29:21 <kaoos> again, thank you :)
06:29:23 <kaoos> have a nice day
06:29:31 <kimmo> no prob

10:01:31 <joris> Hello
10:03:54 <Askarii> hi
10:04:02 <Askarii> nay questions about Gnucash?
10:04:05 <joris> hey Askarii
10:04:09 <joris> yep :)
10:04:19 <Askarii> go right ahead i'll see what I can do
10:04:27 <joris> I just started with gnucash, looks great
10:04:38 <Askarii> it is great :)
10:04:41 <joris> but one thing I can't find out how to do
10:04:46 <Askarii> ok?
10:05:08 <joris> I'm using it for a non-profit organisation, and we have some projects/events
10:05:21 <joris> some income, like sponsoring
10:05:30 <joris> and lots of costs :0
10:05:32 <joris> ;)
10:05:51 <joris> but how can i get an overview for one specific event?
10:06:01 <Askarii> make it a client
10:06:05 <Askarii> then use client reports
10:06:13 <joris> Owww
10:06:13 <Askarii> or
10:06:27 <Askarii> make it a placeholder account with: expenses / Income
10:06:31 <Askarii> then make an account report
10:06:40 <Askarii> quickly those are the two solutions that come to mind
10:06:58 <joris> ah, thanks
10:07:15 <joris> (starts looking for the placeholder option)
10:07:57 <Askarii> create a new account
10:08:01 <Askarii> edit account
10:08:06 <Askarii> check-box "placeholder"
10:10:19 <joris> what's the difference between a 'placeholder' and a normal account?
10:12:00 <Askarii> placeholder isn't an account per-say
10:12:10 <Askarii> it's used for hierarchical organisation
10:12:59 <joris> ok, so i place costs/income under different accounts below the placeholder?
10:13:27 <Askarii> yes
10:13:34 <Askarii> the placeholder being a parent account
10:13:42 <Askarii> then you make an account report by selecting that placeholder
10:13:52 <Askarii> I just thought of something
10:14:20 <Askarii> because your event generates income and expenses, perhaps you can try making it an "employee"... but i'have never used that function yet... employees will come eventually ;)
10:15:09 <joris> ;;)
10:15:32 <joris> Thanks a lot, I will go and puzzle with these options
10:16:53 <Askarii> enjoy the great tool that GnuCash is :D
10:17:42 <joris> I will, thanks ! :)
