I'm afraid they are lost. They are pretty old also: committed more than 11 
years ago. That is around the time of GnuCash 1.3.5 or even earlier. They 
aren't even in (compressed) xml format. I have no idea which is the last 
version of GnuCash that can still read those files.

For now I have removed them. There are 3 example files that are a little more 
recent and can still be opened. I have kept those.

And I have updated the README accordingly.
