Ideally you want to store this stuff by reference, and not turn gnucash into a content management system.
In other words, if gnucash could store a link to a document, and for extra points display that document if practical or launch an external viewer if not, it would be ideal.
This is just an extra metadata field against a transaction.
The document could be stored in the cloud, in svn, wherever, it's all just a URL.
The customer or vendor statements could then include links to data where present, give that to the IRS, done.
