Not surprising; it's just a link.  Mediawiki doesn't "know" about it.

Most likely that's what it is.

I didn't realize you wanted a thumb as opposed to an embedded image.  I
don't know if mediawiki lets you create an IMG HREF in MediaWiki?  If
so, we could just manually create thumbnail images and do it all
manually.
