No, you're not missing anything. The Import GnuCash Accounts feature just
now handles the files better.

Just import "accounts" as usual and the transactions will come along.

You're right. I will look to make it clearer that XML is the supported
format for import. And maybe provide a more descriptive message when
something goes wrong.
