reconciliation problem

I understand what a starting balance is. I think I probably found a
way to change a previously reconciled transaction, perhaps from the
expense side of the transaction.

I don't mind the elbow grease, but is there a way to see what
GnuCash thinks the beginning and ending balance was at the previous
month's statement date? For the statement two months ago? There
ought to be a way to narrow down the discrepancy to at least a
single month's timespan, and then go transaction by transaction
through that month.
