This can take days if you have filesystems mounted from network servers
where the needed libraries are stored.

The person installing software on a unix system is not the user. This is
the administrator. And he should know where to find things on the
system. Do not get confused about these two roles. If you have a home
unix system then you are most likely both of the roles. Most of the
time you are the user, sometimes you have to be administrator.
