For someone who wants to do a simple check register. All that is needed is a few simple
instructions to handle the Transfer column. The default set of accounts contains Income and
Expense. When the user tabs to the Transfer column, (s)he should enter "ex" (without
quotes) when writing a
check, making an ATM withdrawal, etc. and "in" when making any deposit. Gnucash then will choose
Expense in the first case and Income in the second case for the split. All transactions will
be balanced.

Later if the user wants to start tracking expenses or income at a finer level (s)he just
needs to add the accounts and choose appropriately.

My point is that gnucash will work fine for a simple checkbook without modification.
Gnucash is sufficiently flexible that a user can track at a level appropriate for the
user's needs. All that is required is instructions at a level of accounting knowledge
appropriate for the user.
