I can offer no clue about what to rebuild to fix your problem. But  
FWIW, I have been very happy since I started using the fink binary  
packages awhile back.  Upgrading has been much easier and faster.   
Gnucash is the only X11 app that I use. Maybe if I needed other apps  
I would not be so happy with the binary packages.
