Donna 'n Doug,

This remark is not of much use to your current situation, but I'll make 
it anyway :-) - after several years of wrestling with rpms I discovered 
gentoo linux, which uses an excellent software management scheme called 
Portage. I've now installed gentoo about half a dozen times on various 
computers and I have never had any dependency problems. Mind you, you 
need to set aside a little time for the install - using gentoo it's best 
if you compile everything you put on the machine - installing KDE, for 
example, usually takes about 36 hours! If you are interested in linux I 
recommend you take a look at it.
