Failing automake when trying to build version from CVS

I'm not sure what you mean by this.. the 1.9 version will become
gnucash 2 when it's finished.   You're welcome to start translating
it now.  The more you get done now the less you'll have to do
as the 2.0 release approaches.

As Neil said, this is due to limited time and access to the website.
We'll fix the HOWTO in our source tree, but unfortunately changing
the website is much more challenging at the moment.

No.  1.9 will become gnucash 2.0 -- (1.9.x will be the alpha/beta
releases prior to 2.0).  If you translate 1.9 then that translation
will get merged forward as development continues towards 2.0.  So, the
more you get translated now, the less you'll have to translate later.
On the other hand, strings in the 1.9 release are not frozen, so it's
possible you may translate something now and then the string changes
before release.

Still, you should work from 1.9 in subversion's trunk for now.
