What I have done is set gnucash to run in a terminal all the time. Depends on what desktop environment you are working in. I think that KDE and GNOME both allow you to edit the properties of the launcher so that it starts a terminal everytime and then runs gnucash within that. In my current setup, using IceWM, I have the following in my ~./icewm/menu

prog "GnuCash" /home/andrew/gncbuild/share/pixmaps/gnucash/gnucash-icon.png /bin/bash -c "x-terminal-emulator -T \"Gnucash\" -e sh -c \"/home/andrew/gncbuild/bin/gnucash --nofile\"

which starts a lovely gnome-terminal with gnucash. one thing I don't do, that I want to do is pipe all the output to a file. When gnucash crashes, it brings down the g-term with it. the file would act as a log so I could go back and see what happened. Also, I highly recommend the --nofile switch. Its mildly annoying to have to click to open gnucash and then select a file, but it really helps if you've got a bad file and it keeps crashing on you. No hoops to jump through to get it up and running so you can fix the problem or access other files.
