William--
I'm by no means an expert, but it has been my experience that the base Mac
terminal and the X11 terminal are different environments, and setting a path in
Terminal has no effect on the X11 environment. A search at google yields a
couple of threads about how to manage the environments for both, but that's
beyond me. You set the X11 path using an export command.
