Client Report: Bug if beginning of period is not BoY & some fields unchecked

Yes.  please report this to bugzilla.

The problem is that the balance row doesn't look at the columns at all.
The 'fix' will be to refactor the 'add-row' procedure and use that
for the balance row as well.

Note that this bug isn't just about the Reference column; it's there
if you uncheck ANY column.
