The same reconciliation dialog is used for both asset accounts where you
earn interest, like bank accounts, and liability accounts where you pay
interest, like credit card accounts. Having a single global auto-interest
bucket does not fit -- you'll be essentially booking all interest you earn,
and all interest you pay on loans, into a single income/expense account?

Furthermore, Gnucash's new file wizard creates for me a chart of accounts
with four different interest income accounts: "Bond interest", "Checking
interest", "Other interest" and "Savings interest" accounts. That's what I
got when I created a new file. All the different interest accounts would
just sit idle, if you have a single global interest account. Looks to me
like everything else in the application expects a separate per-account
auto-interest bucket.
