keeping different versions

Probably dumb questions but here goes...

I am running 3 distros with gnucash. The versions of gnucash are different; from 2.2.6, 2.2.5, 2.2.4. If I am working in distro and want to do some gnucash work without changing distros, is that going to be a possibility?

I have read about the .log and .xac files and the main file.  I tried copying first the main file and then all the files from the 2.2.6 to the 2.2.4. The balances didn't seem to be the same.

Am I expecting too much? Should I just plan on using one distro for keeping track of my finances?

Thanks,
Harold
