Perhaps you are refering to this bug here:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=610675
Although this one doesn't mention a black rectangle exactly, but rather not
visible text.
There have been several commits related to this bug, which appeared in Gtk
2.18, but not in 2.16 [1].
