Hundreds of files

Can you tell me why there are so many files on my hard drive that look like this: "ClarenceFreestone(Gnu).gnucash.20110323052000"? Are they back ups? I know they're necessary because I deleted a bunch and lost all of my work. Can they be put somewhere besides on my Local Disk? There is also a file that seems to be associated with all of the others that looks like this: "ClarenceFreestone(Gnu)". When I click it the program opens, bugt not my most recent. I deleted a whole lot of these files, then went to the recycle folder and restored them, but I still can't get my most recent gnucasj file. Is there a way to get the most recent file because I had just reconciled my banks and I would like not to have to repeat it. Thanks
