Hi Chris,

As Tom already explains quite nicely, this is currently not encouraged at all 
because you need the business logic to make sense of all the data in the 
database.

On the other hand, John is currently working hard internally to get to a point 
where we can have a real transactional database backend. But the road to there 
is still long though. I'm not going into the details here, because this is the 
gnucash-user list and such discussions belong on gnucash-devel. If this is an 
important feature to you and your company, I invite you to join in this 
effort. We could use the extra help.
