How do I set opening balance in checking account

I've noticed that a lot of questions on this list are accounting 
questions, not gnucash specific ones.

I learned double entry accounting by working through the lessons at
accountingcoach.com
  It's a clear, simple explanation of basic principles. Well worth 
taking a couple of weeks to study.
