Credits befroe debits

Hello All,
    In response to John, where you read on the web that imported transactions with the same date and time are sorted by the Number field, I agree with you that that is incorrect. My register has random Number field sequences. I believe that they are just loaded into the file in the order that they read them in; perhaps by day, if at all.
    In response to Xavier, I need to use the Number field for various transaction codes. If I prefix them with a "1" or a "2" then I cannot aggregate/sort properly as they would lose their uniqueness.
    After both of your valuable inputs, I now believe that the only solution would be to include a new preference such as, "Deposits/Increases before Withdrawals/Decreases within a day ". I think that Quicken has it correct here by complying with banking standards. GC is not workable for me.

This is quite a naïve answer from a newbie who does not know what transactions imported from Quicken look like, but... When I import transactions from the CSV file provided by my bank, the "number" field is left blank. And it is exposed to the user by the UI of GC. I also think that GC does not impose a unicity constraint on it and that one can sort the display on this field.

So, on the condition that Quicken does not use it already, you could aggregate your transactions using custom values (e.g. in your case "1" could mean credit, and "2" debit). Even if Quicken does use it, it depends on whether this number has a significance to you: you could replace it altogether or prefix it to achieve the sort order your desire.

This is also a bit tedious, I'll grant you that. But much less than editing the XML file by hand. And much less risky.

Looking online, I found a page that indicated that GnuCash sorts the transaction by when they were input, down to the second, even though it only shows the date of input. If two transactions have the same input date and time, which they would in an import situation, they are sorted by the Number field. That's what the web page said, but it does not quite match my experience. My transactions seem to uniformly put the debits before the credits and changing a transaction (which I expect to change the date and time of input) does not affect the order.
