yes. that's what happened... i had installed a previous version but somehow it stayed on a disc image, so i downloaded the fixed latest one and dragged it to applications folder (where i hadn't dragged the previous one)... so yeah then i had to go find my file. but all is well.
just a little confusing.

If you’re upgrading you won’t get the new file wizard because you’ve already got a gnucash setup in your home folder. Unless you moved the file it should open automatically; if it doesn’t then you should get a dialog saying that GnuCash can’t find it, which when you dismiss it will bring up GnuCash in the “no file” state, meaning no tabs and a minimal toolbar and menu.
