Hi, Dennis -- it would REALLY be helpful if you would enter your responses
BELOW the text you are responding to, like I am doing now -- it makes it a
lot easier to follow.
I am guessing that you found Colin's suggestion was the one that worked:
$ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
In your earlier message, it said:

Apt reported "The following packages have been kept back" and it listed
gnucash gnucash-common
This meant there was a software dependency that couldn't be satisfied with
a regular apt-get upgrade.
You fixed it by issuing a dist-upgrade command, which tells the package
manager it's OK to remove packages that are "blocking" the installation of
the updates. When you issued the dist-upgrade command, apt would have
reported exactly which packages needed to be removed or replaced.
Most of the time you do NOT have to go to that much trouble to install an
updated GnuCash package. (For example, I didn't have to on MY Ubuntu 14.04
system, so I must have a different set of packages installed.)
However, if the issue comes up again, now you know how to handle it!
