Passwords for MySQL

SSH is a nice idea for more reasons than just protecting the password.  What
kind of system is being used for both your DB (server) and GNUcash (client)? 
I think my problem in doing this is that my hosting service restricts the
use of SSH.  I think I'll either have to move to a non-shared service or at
minimum pay extra fees but will investigate further.
