Report how to: Total of cutomer purchases

How would one create a report that showed how much a customer has purchased
over a specified time?
How about a report showing every customers sales.

The Customers Overview shows balances due but it would also be nice to
figure out at a glance who is the best customer in terms of sales or in my
case donations.

This has a very important value for non profits that are required to send a
letter once a donor gives of $250.
