And FWIW I just tested Gnucash.app 2.6.11 on 10.11.3 and F::Q 1.38 without errors and with an instant response.

What you've reported sounds like network trouble. All that having it work correctly on another box proves is that it's either intermittent (did you try price retrieval at the same time on both machines?) or a problem between the Mac and the cable or DSL modem. If your network is wired it could be a bad cable or a bad port on a switch or router; if wifi on both machines then it might be signal issue. If you can rule all of those out it's something wrong with your Mac. 

You can use gnc-fq-dump along with the usual network admin tools to test your Mac's connectivity.
