As David T mentioned earlier the .gnucash file is compressed and it has to be saved in uncompressed XML format first.  To do that click on Edit > Preferences >General and uncheck Compress File then File > Save As... whatever filename and location you are using for your experiment.  

Remember when you go back to your original filename and location to again click on Edit > Preferences >General and check Compress Fileto resume saving in compressed format.

1.  it is incredibly easy to break the file so that GnuCash cannot read it.

2.  A large part of the file is obfuscated by using tokens instead clear text so cross references are really difficult to follow.
