07:18:28 <johng> Been using 1v6x on Ubuntu for some time now, and recently checked out the site and saw the new version 2 updates, and the release of a Windows version.
07:19:45 <johng> Been checking for upgrade or release notes in case there are any issues with upgrading. My questions are 1: can I upgrade directly to version 2 on Linux and are there any data file issues?
07:20:47 <johng> Question 2: if I have my datafiles on a common Fat32 partition can I access them from either Windows or Linux (not simultaneously)? are the data files completely interchangeable between Windows and linux?

13:13:48 <jamesthomas> Hi. can anyone answer a basic question on split transactions?
13:14:27 <andi5> quote from the topic: """Don't meta-ask, just ask"""
13:15:52 <jamesthomas> I'm trying to add a Split transaction to show VAT for purchases I have made. can you talk me through this?
13:19:12 *** Zoolooc_ has quit IRC
13:19:52 <jamesthomas> I have a sub account in Expenses for Petrol, and want to show VAT in the split transaction but not sure what figures to put in each box
13:31:50 <andi5> jamesthomas: did you read http://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/FAQ#Q:_How_do_I_use_GnuCash_to_calculate_VAT.3F
13:31:52 <andi5> ?
13:43:08 <jamesthomas> yes I did. It didnt really help. For now I just want to show VAT as a sub account (Expenses: Taxes: VAT)
13:43:25 <jamesthomas> I'm a newbie at accounting
13:44:44 <jamesthomas> To enter a sPlit transaction, should i enter the description and esxpense and then hit split?
13:45:51 <jamesthomas> I have a bill for £20.01, where £17.03 is excluding VAT
13:47:41 <jsled> jamesthomas: you can hit "Split" whenever.
13:47:53 <jsled> All it does is toggle the "Split view" of the current transaction.
13:48:33 <jamesthomas> In the top line the total expense is 20.03.
13:49:53 <jamesthomas> i mean 20.01
13:52:11 <jsled> jamesthomas: what account's register are you viewing?
13:53:16 <jamesthomas> expenses:vehicles:petrol
13:53:40 <jsled> This is a bill you paid ... like at the gas pump?
13:53:48 <jamesthomas> yes
13:53:49 <jsled> It's usually easier to enter transactions from Asset accounts ...
13:53:58 <jsled> Did you pay with a card, or cash, or...?
13:54:03 <jamesthomas> card
13:54:17 <jsled> So, open the register for the card's account.
13:54:19 <jamesthomas> debit card
13:54:36 <jamesthomas> ok
13:54:50 <jsled> jamesthomas: have you read the gnucash tutorial and concepts guide? In the Help menu?
13:55:27 <jamesthomas> yes. couldnt understand everything
13:55:49 <jsled> Section 4.2.2 is your friend, but I'll say...
13:55:54 <jamesthomas> My bills paid I have been entering from the expenses register
13:56:15 <jsled> It's generally easier to enter from the Asset accounts, for a couple of reasons...
13:56:26 <jsled> 1/ you know how much you paid, but the expense portion can be variable.
13:56:54 <jsled> 2/ If you have a single payment/transaction that touches multiple Expense accounts, it's a bit easier to enter it from the "fixed" perspective of the payment/asset account.
13:57:13 <jamesthomas> I see, thanks
13:57:17 <jsled> In nay case, the key thing with split transactions is that the left and right columns must equal eachother.
13:57:26 <jamesthomas> I dont need to go back and re enter all though do I?
13:57:29 <jsled> All splits in every transaction sum to zero.
13:58:06 <jsled> So, if you pay out 21.01, and the actual expense is 17.03, then you also need a 3.98 split so everything balances.
13:58:47 <jsled> So, 1 "withdrawl" split from Assets:Debit (21.01) and 2 "expense" splits to Expenses:Vehicle:Petrol (17.03) and Expenses:Taxes:VAT (3.98)
13:59:02 <jsled> jamesthomas: no, you don't need to ... unless you want to change them.
13:59:52 <jsled> While it's a little easier (for me, at least) to reason about entering transactions from the Asset account's register, they're identical no matter where you enter them from.
14:00:06 <jsled> (unless you're going multi-currency or something...)
14:00:09 *** IanL has quit IRC
14:00:33 <jamesthomas> thats good to know
14:00:42 <jsled> In fact, you can enter transactions from anywhere, really, using the "advanced" register views like auto-split and transaction-journal...
14:01:13 <jsled> (Or even Basic, after you've pressed the Split button to get the "expanded" view)
14:02:24 *** nomeata has joined #gnucash
14:04:08 <jamesthomas> After I split, I'm entering the figure in the "decrease" box yes?
14:05:07 <jamesthomas> It added an imbalance of 40.02 ??
14:09:34 <jsled> well, then, you entered it on the wrong side.
14:10:22 <jamesthomas> I have Increase Decrease Balance
14:10:40 <jsled> For an asset account?
14:11:14 <jamesthomas> yes
14:11:17 <jsled> I guess so ... checking accounts have "deposit" and "widthdrawl" columns, anyways.
14:11:30 <jsled> But it doesn't matter...
14:11:39 <jsled> Given that you paid out money, this would be a "decrease", right?
14:12:03 <jsled> (in the right-hand column)
14:12:15 <jamesthomas> exactly
14:12:29 <jamesthomas> where I put it
14:13:06 <jsled> Okay. So the other two value have to both be in the left-hand column, and must sum to the same amount as the right-hand column.
14:17:46 <jamesthomas> What I need is Assets:Debit to show 20.01 Expenses:vehicles:petrol to show 17.03 and expenses:tax:VAT to show 2.98
14:18:09 <jamesthomas> like you said but its adding them all together
14:18:24 <jamesthomas> and putting in an imbalance
14:19:19 <jsled> If you put the 20.01 in the right hand column ("decrease") and the other two in the left column ("increase"), it shouldn't add the imbalance split.
14:20:35 <jsled> (though you might need to remove the existing imbalance split by deleting (the contents of) all the fields and clicking on another split.
14:21:09 <jamesthomas> bloody hell yes
14:22:07 <jamesthomas> that worked.
14:22:56 <jamesthomas> thankyou
14:23:23 <jsled> you're welcome.

14:25:45 <jamesthomas> CanI add a column in Asset account to show a cash payment?
14:26:13 <jamesthomas> I havnt seperated my accounting for using a debit card, cheque, cash
14:26:44 <jsled> No. But there's an 'Action' column that you might be able to use for such.
14:26:54 *** Demitar has joined #gnucash
14:27:19 <jsled> Another way to do it would be to make Cash a separate account.
14:27:43 <jsled> {Assets:Cash} or whatever.
14:28:08 <jamesthomas> I see
14:29:00 <jamesthomas> thanks for your help jsled. How do I show transfers from my business account to my personal account?
14:29:31 <jsled> Each set of accounts would be a separate datafile.
14:29:47 <jsled> Depending on how the transfer is made, it might be an Expense in one set of books, and Income in the other.
14:31:43 <jamesthomas> To show that i have transferred say £100 from my Asset:business register to my Asset:personal
14:33:27 <jsled> If you want to model it that way, I suppose you could just do that.
14:33:36 <jsled> But, IANAA. TINAA.
