11:49:25 <nawab> Hi, is it possible to raise an invoice for a certain amount to multiple customers in one go?
11:49:28 <nawab> The reason I ask is, I am trying to track people paying fees for an event and it will be tedious rasing a dozen invoices for the same ammount with the same description. ta
11:52:55 <warlord> nawab: unfortunately no.
11:53:46 <nawab> is there any possibility of hacking it with a script?
11:54:36 <warlord> well, if you're willing to program then anything is possible.. but I dont think all the business features are exported to scheme so i'm not sure how scriptable it would be per se.
11:56:02 <nawab> ok, never mind. cheers for the help.
11:57:14 <warlord> you're welcome.
11:57:33 <warlord> Adding a "Duplicate Invoice" operation WOULD be a useful patch.
12:03:28 <nawab> out of interest what language would that have to be in?
12:06:18 <warlord> C
12:10:27 <nawab> I might have a look, cheers. (on a long todo list :-P)
12:24:30 <sbahra> warlord, other option is a revision control system.
12:24:44 <sbahra> warlord, postgresql would've allowed for atomic transactions, which is not feasible with svn.
12:25:02 <warlord> nawab: cool.
12:25:14 <sbahra> One accountant, so SVN isn't too bad.
12:25:19 <warlord> "atomic transactions"? Huh?
12:25:41 <sbahra> warlord, I assume if someone enters a transaction into gnucash...it is committed to the database.
12:26:13 <sbahra> It is a redundant combination, but there is the "accounting" transaction and the "computer" transaction (where the latter implies atomicity).
12:26:13 <warlord> Depends what your backend is. Right now it's an XML file, so the transaction isn't "stored" until the user clicks "save"
12:26:27 <sbahra> warlord, and with the PostgreSQL backend? Same thing?
12:26:36 <sbahra> Atleast when it was "there".
12:27:30 <warlord> No, when it was there the data was stored on every transaction commit.. And GDA will also provide a save-as-you-go solution with SQLIte, MySQL, or PG. but that necessity of hitting "save" shouldn't be a deal-breaker.
12:28:09 <sbahra> It isn't for an organization as small as us
12:28:14 <sbahra> I just like to think ahead.
12:28:48 <sbahra> warlord, is there then a way to force gnucash not to compress the XML file?
12:28:48 <warlord> Well we're working on GDA. I do want to move away from XML as the default and use SQLIte instead.
12:28:55 <warlord> Of course.
12:29:00 <warlord> It's a User Preference.
12:30:31 <sbahra> Yeah, got it.
12:30:43 <sbahra> gnucash + svn is pretty feasible. We'll be going with that now
12:30:49 <sbahra> warlord, have you ever taken a look at "ledger"?
12:32:16 <sbahra> I have to run
12:32:21 <warlord> you mean the deriviative of sql-ledger?
12:32:22 <sbahra> Thanks.
12:32:29 <sbahra> warlord, is it?
12:32:54 <warlord> I looked at it last around 2001.. and quickly tossed it out because I didn't want to have to install (and protect!) a web server for my finances.
12:33:02 <warlord> ... and it didn't do invoicing at all.
12:33:07 <sbahra> warlord, http://www.newartisans.com/ledger.html
12:33:18 <sbahra> No, it doesn't do invoicing.
12:33:35 <sbahra> And unfortunately, ...it is the most terrible piece of code I have ever seen.
12:33:57 <sbahra> Very unreliable, etc...
12:34:02 <sbahra> But I really like the concept :-)
12:34:06 * sbahra poofs
12:34:36 <warlord> well, it has very different design criteria than gnucash.
12:35:00 <warlord> gnucash is a desktop app, and started as a quicken-like system.. expanding into quickbook-like features.

14:47:22 <daum> warlord, do you use gnucash for a business?
14:47:38 <warlord> yes
14:47:45 <daum> how large of a business?
14:47:47 <warlord> and for personal use
14:47:51 <warlord> not very large at all.
14:48:16 <daum> do you use sql backend or just the files?
14:48:43 <warlord> cant use SQL for business
14:48:57 <daum> oh yeah
14:49:32 <daum> quick question for you, for estimates what do you do? I created the html then edited it to say estimate instead of invoice then ocnverted to a pdf, but i figure there is a simpler way?
14:51:32 <warlord> Never used gnucash to create an estimate. There's no financial reason to have gnucash store that information.
14:51:54 <daum> true just liked the reports that it cretaed so was trying to use it
15:00:33 <warlord> fair enough.
15:00:50 <warlord> I run a small consulting company, so never had use of Estimates.
15:00:55 <warlord> (or Quotes)
15:01:08 <warlord> But one could certanly imagine re-using the Invoicing infrastructure for it.
15:01:32 <daum> heh, i run a small one too, but often we provide customers estimates on the full cost of what they want developed
15:24:01 <warlord> well, one thing you could do is create the invoice, don't post it, but then print it anyways.

15:32:39 <warlord> closest you've got is to mark it "inactive:

20:18:50 <wubrgamer> lots of logs, I don't need that

22:59:13 <Guanavia> Hello. I'm trying to decide between jgnash and gnucash for use on a windows box. The startup .bat file hang ups every single time it runs when attempting to run the chcp 1251 prompt. Looks like that command is mainly for keyboard mapping. I'm wondering how neccessary it is to proper operation? It seems to run just fine if I omit that command...
