10:31:40 <CMoosey> Hi, I was wondering if someone would be able to help me with a problem I've got running the Windows port of Gnucash 2.2.8? I just upgraded from 2.2.6, which used to run fine, but now when I run gnucash-bin, gfconftool-2 keeps repeatedly flashing up in a command line window stating "Program too big to fit into memory."
10:44:54 *** warlord-afk is now known as warlord
10:45:02 <warlord> CMoosey: why are you running gnucash-bin by hand?
10:46:13 <CMoosey> oh sorry, I meant gnucash.bat. In any case, I'm just using the shortcut the installer created
11:10:51 <warlord> How much RAM do you have on your system?
11:10:58 <warlord> What version of Windows?
11:11:40 <CMoosey> 4GB of RAM. Windows Vista
11:12:03 <CMoosey> Sorry, I have to reboot my computer. I'll be right back.
11:12:07 *** CMoosey has left #gnucash
11:13:21 <benjamin> four gigabytes isn't nearly enough for windows vista... *tut*
11:13:32 <warlord> hehehe
11:13:51 <benjamin> gah!
11:14:48 <benjamin> some guy has blatantly just seen the "for alternative payment details, please see below" message on my website, scrolled down to the alternative payment details, and then scrolled _past_ them to our email address
11:14:58 <benjamin> to which he has sent an email asking for the details

11:15:43 <warlord> benjamin: Hahaha
11:15:45 <warlord> Amusing.
11:15:52 <CMoosey> Sorry about that. I'm back now.
11:16:14 <benjamin> irritating
11:16:20 <benjamin> some people are just idiots, I suppose
11:16:42 <benjamin> or perhaps he thinks the product is overpriced and wants to inconvenience me as a form of punishment ¬.¬
11:18:00 <warlord> CMoosey: So, it's still complaining at you?
11:20:31 <CMoosey> Unfortunately, yes
11:21:55 <warlord> :-(
11:22:07 <warlord> I'm afraid I don't know what to tell you. It's probably a local configuration issue.
11:22:43 <CMoosey> Hmm, ok. I'm going to try reverting to a previous release.
11:25:46 <CMoosey> 2.2.7 works for me (as did 2.2.6).
11:29:13 <warlord> Well, you can file a bug report in bugzilla... Or you can send mail to gnucash-user
11:30:16 <CMoosey> OK, will do. Thank you for your help.

15:21:37 <LeFou> if i have a $1000 liability, and I talk 'em down to $500, how would i record that trxn in double-entry?
15:26:30 <warlord> LeFou: How did you "talk them down to $500"?
15:27:02 <LeFou> well, suppose i said "I can pay you $100/mo. for 10 months, or $500 now and be done with it"
15:27:13 <LeFou> and they said "ok"
15:27:25 <warlord> Oh, well that would be something like "Income:Forgiven Loan"
15:28:07 <LeFou> cool

19:55:26 <halycon> Is anyone around that can assist me in doing a split transaction using GNUCash I have never done one before and want to make sure I am doing it right
19:59:58 <cortana> halycon: i can try :)
20:02:08 <cortana> halycon: generally you know you are doing it right if gnucash does not automatically add a split to an Unbalanced account
20:08:31 <halycon> halycon> hey
20:08:31 <halycon> <halycon> thanks for your help
20:08:31 <halycon> <halycon> so this is what I did, I have a bank chequings account
20:08:31 <halycon> <halycon> and whenever I would make a cash withdrawl from the ATM machine
20:08:53 <halycon> in GNUCash I would do a transfer from my chequings account to my Cash in Wallet
20:09:19 <halycon> so now I have all these transactions in my Cash In Wallet account
20:09:45 <halycon> and now I want to put what expenses I spent the money on
20:10:04 <halycon> so I am assuming I have to do a split transaction for the transactions in the Cash In Wallet Account
20:10:18 <halycon> is that correct?
20:10:19 <cortana> hm
20:10:38 <cortana> i think most people have sparate transactions for spnding th money
20:10:48 <cortana> so you have a transaction from bank acct -> cash for the withdrawl
20:11:07 <cortana> and then later separate transfrs from cash -> expenses:whatever when spending the mobeyu
20:11:09 <cortana> *money
20:11:56 <halycon> yeah like in the chequings account yeah
20:12:02 <halycon> that is what i want to do from the sounds
20:12:24 <halycon> ok so in my Chequings account I have a transaction and it has
20:13:10 <halycon> the date > Cheq # > Transfer > R > Deposit > Withdrawl > Balance columns
20:13:22 <halycon> and for the transaction in that account there is the date
20:13:28 <halycon> the cheq # is blank
20:14:02 <halycon> then the Transfer is set to Assets:Current Assets:Cash In Wallet
20:14:06 <halycon> then it has the amount and all that stuff
20:14:23 <cortana> all good so far
20:14:36 <halycon> then in the corresponding transaction in the Cash in Wallet account
20:15:00 <halycon> the transfer is set to Assets:Current Assets:ASB Streamline
20:15:35 <halycon> but with my other transactions that arent transfers that is usually where you would put what expense the money went to
20:15:36 <cortana> i assume that's the account the money is withdrawn from?
20:15:57 <halycon> well I withdrew the money from my chequings account
20:16:21 <halycon> but in GNUCash it has a Cash in Wallet account
20:16:27 <halycon> as well as your chequings and savings accounts
20:16:48 <cortana> basically, the account listed there is the other account that the money came from (a transfer from chequing to cash) or was spent on (a transfer from cash to an expense account)
20:17:09 <halycon> yeah
20:17:25 <halycon> I dont know how to tell GNUCash what i spent the cash in my wallet on
20:17:28 <cortana> there is no difference between a transfer, and a withdrawl, and spending really, it's all just a case of perspective
20:17:37 <cortana> ok you do one transfer from chequing -> cash
20:17:55 <cortana> then when you buy a banana, you do a totally separate transfer from cash -> expenses:food
20:17:55 <halycon> yeah
20:18:29 <halycon> yeah but in GNUCash in the transfer field where you would normally put in Expenses:food
20:18:34 <halycon> it is already filled with Assets:Current Assets:ASB Streamline
20:18:49 <cortana> isn't that the account that the money came from?
20:18:53 <halycon> yeah
20:18:58 <cortana> since this is a transfer into the (cash) account
20:19:00 <cortana> from that account
20:19:21 <halycon> yeah that is the account the cash came from
20:19:35 <halycon> so i was assuming I had to do a split transaction
20:19:42 <cortana> not in this case
20:19:59 <halycon> in the Cash In Wallet account so that I could set what I actually spent the cash on instead of it showing up as a transfer
20:20:19 <cortana> if you are wondering about your overall spending, you should check out the reports
20:20:35 <cortana> for instance, income & expense -> income statement
20:20:56 <cortana> that will tot up all your expenses and show you where your money went
20:21:02 <halycon> yeah
20:21:06 <halycon> I just am not sure
20:21:31 <cortana> regardless of the details (since th fact that it was withdrawn from chequing -> cash and then spent from cash -> expenses:bananas is not really important)
20:22:00 <cortana> after all, taking money out of the bank account and into your wallet is a separate transaction from buying a banana
20:22:01 <halycon> hmmm
20:22:38 <halycon> yeah but where do i put the transaction that says what i spent the cash on
20:22:52 <cortana> as a separate transaction from cash -> expenses:whatever
20:22:53 <halycon> that is why i thought i had to do a split transaction
20:24:26 <cortana> a split is for somthing else... for instance, if you bought three things from the same shop, with your credit card, you could enter them as three separate transactions, or one transaction with four splits (one to increase the credit card balance, and one more to expenses, for each item bought)
20:25:25 <halycon> oh ok
20:25:52 <halycon> so i should just make another transaction in the cash account alongside the transfer transactions showing what i spent the money on
20:26:27 <cortana> yup
20:26:54 <halycon> oh ok
20:27:02 <halycon> ill give that a shot then!
20:27:11 <halycon> I just dont want to screw up my accounts
20:27:16 <halycon> like I did when I was using Quicken
20:27:24 <cortana> well, you can always make a backup :)
20:27:40 <halycon> yeah I know I did that with Quicken ;) and I still messed it up
20:27:53 <cortana> if you want to be certain you might consider storing them under some kind of revision control like subversion :)
20:28:01 <halycon> yeah
20:28:13 <halycon> that would be a good idea
20:28:53 <halycon> ok
20:28:57 <halycon> well thanks for your help ;)
20:29:03 <cortana> good luck :)
