loading config.auto from config.user

     That was one of the first things I tried, but I see:

gnucash: [D] "loading user configuration"
gnucash: [D] "gnc:find-in-directories looking for ""~/.gnucash/config.auto"" in
"("/home/kevin/.gnucash/scm" "/usr/local/share/gnucash/scm")
gnucash: [D] " checking for ""/home/kevin/.gnucash/scm/~/.gnucash/config.auto"
gnucash: [D] " checking for ""/usr/local/share/gnucash/scm/~/.gnucash/config.a
gnucash: [D] "Running functions on hook "startup-hook

and my preferences don't get loaded.  I've also tried the full path rather than
the ~ path with no more success.  Using (gnc:load "../config.auto") I see the
following additional debug info before the startup-hook:

gnucash: [D] "found file ""/home/kevin/.gnucash/scm/../config.auto"
gnucash: [D] "loaded file ""/home/kevin/.gnucash/scm/../config.auto"
