Wow, that's really unfortunate.  This reminds me of a situation I have
been in all too often recently with construction contractors for my
home remodeling: I just want to ask them "in what universe is this
OK?"

You might try contacting Ettore Perazzoli<ettore@helixcode.com>... he's 
a major gtkhtml author, and I would be interested to hear what he has to 
say about future plans for printing. This sounds like an oversight rather 
than a design feature.
