Then maybe you can answer why you keep the _number_ of shares that you own
in any one company. Because the _number_ of shares is an inventory problem
not accounting.

Payroll can be anything from a daily to a yearly activity, and is really a
specialized set of accounts payable. Inventory control, on the other hand,
while it interacts strongly with accounting, is not strictly accounting at
all.
