OK. In the online docs the Stock, Mutual Fund account is a three column
account that tracks price, _Number of shares_ and cost.

Doesn't this mean that we already have the start of inventory recording in
Gnucash?

On the 2000/07/29 Richard Wackerbarth asked about cost basis of inventory
(in paticular, equities).  If you look at the money flow you only need two
colunm accounts for the various finance sources and sinks. But you have to
keep a record of the number of shares somewhere else.

Also the Stock Ticker is part inventory. If you want _only_ accounting then
the Stock Ticker is in the wrong app.
