No.  As root, it works.

% fi mklibcat.scm
/usr/local/share/slib/mklibcat.scm
/usr/local/share/guile/slib/mklibcat.scm    ...is the same file due to the
symlink




Now it runs just fine!
That was quite a ride!
I never would have been able to do it without you
and I'm not sure I could repeat all the steps but
it is working.

Thanks for all your help.
I hope the FreeBSD ports folks can update whatever is necessary
to simplify all this.
