Account register locks up!

I am running GnuCash 1.5.4 that I downloaded and compiled april 9.  I
opened a Mutual Fund account type and hit the Enter Button.  The
selected line was the blank line at the end of the register.  The cpu
meter pegged, the Load Procs started increasing, and GnuCash would not
respond to any keystrokes or mouse clicks.
