Someone else can probably give a better definition, but a mutual
fund is an investment where you buy shares from a fund. The fund
can invests the money in different specific investments like stocks,
bonds, etc. The price of the mutual fund shares is reflected in the
prices of the underlying investments. Mutual funds, or something
like them, are knows a 'Unit Trusts' in some places.
