libgal8 is actually the (current) evolution development version of
libgal.  Evolution is constantly making changes/updates (well, I think
its api is pretty stable, relatively speaking). They should be going to
libgal9 before too long. :/  As far as I know, it's not part of the
'official' Ximian Gnome dist.  Looking on their ftp site, they have
libgal6 and libgal7.  That being said, gnucash should still compile OK
against libgal8.  However, if it were my project, I would just make sure
that gnucash compiles against the current main Gnome distribution, and
let 3rd party distributors bring gnucash to their distributions.  I
believe this is already what y'all do?  Ximian does 'updates' on a
somewhat infrequent basis with gnucash and some other utilities.
Perhaps they'd be nice enough to submit their patches back to you guys
(their Web site says they do--whether or not they actually follow
through is something only the gnucash developers can answer).
