You could tell your parents to use *BSD and Gnucash:

alaric$ cd /usr/pkgsrg/finance/gnucash
alaric$ sudo make install
<much auto-installation of required libraries and prompts about upgrading
existing libraries that are too old>
alaric$ gnucash
