If you already checked out a CVS source tree, you can find the 
how-to-translate in the file doc/README.translator.txt . Some more hints 
are in the file po/README. If you need further information, don't hesitate 
to ask on the mailing list. Instructions on how to check out the current 
CVS are on the website (I think...).

Anyway it is really great if you can help out with the French translation.
