In Germany, you might write

"Zweihundertvierunddreissig DM und sechsundfünfzig Pfennig"

and

"Zweihundertvierunddreissig DM ---------------------"

meaning "234 DM and 56 Pfennig" [100 Pfennig are one DEM] which is 
comparable to the AUS solution. However, the number-to-word conversion is 
a big mess and not quite straightforward (the order of the number-words 
changes several time in a big number). 

BUT virtually nobody uses cheques anyway anymore. I wouldn't be surprised 
if Quicken et al. in their German version don't have cheque printing 
support included at all. So we can just leave this out for our German 
version -- and rather focus on the implementation of online-banking :)
