FTR, MIT/Athena runs a computing environment that contains anywhere
from two to five different computing platforms at any one time.
Currently the "supported" platforms are Solaris, Irix, and Linux. At
one point (many moons ago) there were nine different OSes that needed
to be supported: IBM/RT AOS4, Vax BSD43, MIPS Ultrix42, Sun SunOS4,
Sun Solaris2, RS/6000 AIX, SGI Irix, PC Linux, PC NetBSD. Those of us
from that era got very good at writing _VERY_ portable code, and not
depending on any particular compiler or system feature. Then again,
nowadays GCC is one of the first programs to be built on any new
platform ;)
