some autoconf issues in actual CVS

I have had the same problem as Christian on a fresh checkout and an 'cvs
update -C' "fixed" it as Jan pointed out.

If I wouldn't read this mailing list, I would have spent hours to figure
out what to do. I would suggest at least a short comment in the README
about this problem.
