Compiling the CVS head

I get this too, try running autoconf directly after autogen fails.

autoconf --enable-maintainer-mode (whatever else you added to 
autogen here)

Now, I fail copletely to understand, why, for me the autogen 
stuff fails, but running autoconf directly is okay.

It is, by the way, a major change in autoconf-2.53 which caused 
Hampton to add a bunch of code to configure.in in the hope of 
sorting it out.
