Register really broken

Ok, this is a newly introduced bug. I tried the above on my install that
was made before the fix for the close-window with 'x' crash fix went in
and it had no problem, so it seems to have been introduced as part of
that fix. Once I updated to the latest cvs code it crashed as described.
