ok, i am trying to compile the tarball of 1.7.1 but
configure can't seem to find libgal.  i get the following
error:

checking for main in -lgal... Unknown library `gal' no
configure: error: gal library not found. See the README and
config.log for more info.

however, i have libgal in /usr/lib:

lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           16 Oct 15 12:40 /usr/lib/libgal.so -> libgal.so.19.0.3
- -rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root       940436 Jun 24 05:50 /usr/lib/libgal.so.19.0.3

might someone have some suggestions on why configure can't
seem to find libgal?  thanks.
