Yes. Gnucash currently uses both GdkWChar (32 bit character) and gchar
(8 bit character) strings. It does not use the UTF-8 manipulation
routines.

Please explain further. What bug does gnucash rely on? I've been using
libxml2 in the gnome2 branch without any noticeable problem.
