a request for the next 1.8.* version

There are a number of build problems, particulary on mips, but some
other archs too, which are the end result of gnucash using quite
outdated auto* tools.

Would it be possible for the next 1.8.* release to use libtool 1.5*
and autoconf 1.50*?

This requires some working getting things "up to speed" because some
stuff has changed, but the files currently in place for gnucash are
deprecated and really shouldn't be in production software anymore.
