Christian: Did your rpm install ever work with 2.0.x? If yes, then the
problem obviously is due to some recent changes. But I rather suspect
this is due to the fundamental ways gconf works.

Did you read http://www.gnome.org/projects/gconf/, the section "RPM/deb
packages should disable schema installation during the 'make install'
phase" under "Application developer information"? The normal "make
install" will directly install the .schemas files through gconftool, but
for rpm this will never work because of DESTDIR. The "official"
workaround is exactly what is described on that gconf page: Disable
.schemas installation during "make install" and instead do this
manually. I thought suse also has some official rules on how to deal
with this...?
