SQLite is the default backend for libgda. The gnucash developer
working on the backend has tested more with sqlite than with mysql.

I've tried a couple runs with sqlite. I had some self-inflicted
problems, but once those were cleared up I also ran into at least
painfully slow response times and possibly a bug or two. I have to try
a couple other things to make sure I haven't shot myself in the other
foot.
